File Formats for sending Label Lists to Cable Markers Company

There are two file types CSV(Comma Delimited text) and TXT(Tab delimited text) that can be supplied to Cable Markers Company for conversion to heat shrinkable tubing markers. Each file must consist of all the markers for one tubing size and color, an example would be B2 ½" White. The files can be e-mailed to cablemarkers.com or sent directly to Cable Markers Company. Along with the data files you should specify the following requirements for the markers:

  1. Tubing Type
  2. Tubing Size (before shrinking) "or diameter size of wire you’ll be using"
  3. Tubing Color
  4. Color of Print (Foil)
  5. Marker Length
  6. Any special packaging requirements

The following is an explanation of the file types that we can accept and the correct way to setup your files. If you have any questions or need additional assistance please call our offices at (949) 699-1636.

Comma Delimited text file:

The file can be generated in either a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel or in a word processing program such as Microsoft Word. Figure 1, shows a typical example of a Microsoft Excel file. This example shows a 2-line marker with column A containing the information for the line 1 and column B the information for line 2 of the markers. There is an additional column C showing the number of labels required. This is the standard format for supplying label lists to Cable Markers Company.

Figure 1.

To generate a CSV (Comma delimited) file the user would select the FILE menu , SAVE AS command. A dialogue box opens up, like the one shown in figure 2, select the SAVE AS drop down box and select CSV (Comma delimited) as the file type as shown in figure 2.

Figure 2

You would give the file a unique name and submit this to Cable Markers Company along with a request for the tubing type, color, size, and length for your wire markers.

Tab Delimited text file:

You can also submit your files in a Tab delimited file format. This format uses a TAB (character ® ) to separate the fields of data and a PARAGRAPH return (character ¿ ) to separate the records in a data set. To save the example from Figure 1 to a Tab delimited text file the user would select the SAVE AS drop down box and select TXT (Tab delimited) file format instead of CSV as the file type as shown in figure 2.

To create a Tab delimited text file with a word processor like Microsoft Word type the information for your labels with a tab (character ® ) separating the individual fields of data such as: line 1® line 2 ® (and) #Labels. Each label (record) would be on a separate line separated by a carriage return (character ¿ ) as shown in Figure 3 below.

Figure 3

As you can see there is a tab (character) between fields of information such as Line 1 and Line 2 and a paragraph return (character ¶ ) between records or labels. This file can be saved as a standard Tab delimited text file (TXT) and submitted to Cable Markers Company along with the tubing information detailed above.
